    Fairview Health Services is looking for a fulltime Surgical Technologist for the Operating Room at University of Minnesota Medical Center (Minneapolis) – West Bank Campus. 

     

    The West Bank has 18 operating rooms, with an average of 36 cases per day.  We provide state of the art surgical suites for adult and pediatric patients needing surgical intervention.  Surgical services are provided to patients in the following clinical specialties: general, dental, eye, ear, nose and throat, endoscopy, orthopedics/spine, Cardiovascular (peds), neurology (peds), bariatrics (peds), transplant (peds), robotic, gynecological, urology and plastics.

     

    Position can be either 64, 72 or 80 hours per 2 weeks pay period (exact amount deterimed at offer).  Includes rotating day/evening/night shifts, and rotating weekends and holidays, including call.  The majority of the schedule is on the Day and Evening shifts; occasional night shifts to provide coverage for time off and/or holidays.  Call starts at the end of a shift:  3:15pm, 5:30pm, 7:30pm and ends at 6:45am on weekdays.  Weekend call is 24 hours and typically 1 weekend a month on average.  Call response time is currently 45 minutes.

    Responsibilities/Job Description

    The Surgical Technologist performs the functions of a surgical technologist as a scrub person during surgical procedures providing patient care services appropriate to the age of the patients (ages pediatric through geriatric) served during the shift of duty in collaboration with the RN.  Is responsible for adhering to standards of nursing practice and patient care, correct use of supplies/equipment and maintenance of the surgical suite under the direction of a RN.

     

    Serves as scrub person during operative procedures

    • Anticipates surgeon’s needs
    • Supplies appropriate instruments, suture and specialty items.
    • Maintains aseptic technique during all sterile procedures.
    • Assures proper identification and handling of specimens.
    • Completes all required sponge, sharps and instrument counts.
    • Follows appropriate action in emergency situations.

    Provides patient care

    • Adheres to standards of clinical practice and patient care appropriate to the age of the patients.
    • Assists in transfer/positioning of patients.
    • Collaborates with the MD and circulating nurse to provide care for each patient.
    • Respects the confidentiality of all information

    Corrects use and setup of supplies and equipment

    • Assures availability and proper functioning of supplies and equipment.
    • Assembles and adjust equipment.
    • Cleans, replenishes and sterilizes instruments and supplies as needed.
    • Participates in the evaluation of new equipment or supplies.
    • Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room in readiness of next patient.

    Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

    • Military, LPN surgical assistant or surgical technologist training
    • BLS certification or ability to obtain by hire date

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist program
    • AST certification or certification eligible at time of hire
    • 1 to 3 years surgical experience

    Other Required Skills

    • Knowledge of physical, psychosocial and cognitive developmental needs of population served
    • Knowledge of age appropriate outcomes and interventions.

    • Demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations
    • Ability to work well under a team environment
